Nearly two years ago I left sunny Los Angeles for a meeting of the Episcopal Church Task Force on Older Adult Ministries in New York City. We nearly always met in NYC and this time I was excited because I was going to spend an extra couple of days in the city with my sisters. We had been planning the time together for several months, which in our case always means planning the meals first, and the adventures second. My good friend, Sarah, who is a seminarian at Berkley Divinity School at Yale, came in for an afternoon and she and I decided to take Jesus on an adventure. Little did I know that Jesus and I were in for an extra adventure that week. Unfortunately as the storm warnings got worse, I realized that getting out of town was going to be a challenge. Instead we weathered the storm at my sister's place in the Financial District. We then escaped to a hotel out by JFK and waited several days for the airport to open again. The hotel had limited power, Wifi and no running water. HBO was showing Waterworld on what seemed a constant cycle which I am fairly sure was an evil plan to mock the east coast. Eventually we made it back to Los Angeles safely. Jesus was lucky enough to get his own seat on the plane back, but the flight attendant did make him buckle up!
